Just a Dead Tree or an Entire Eco Whoville Living in There?
Who knew how important tree snags are? This (5) minute video “Tree Talks, Forests for the Bay” lays it out very well.
It gives new admiration for all of those tree snags we are seeing around Ambleside-Dundarave.
According to the experts we need to first and foremost protect our trees because successful replanting can be a difficult and uncertain enterprise.
However, when trees are a genuine hazard and must be cut down, even then they are playing a vital role in the eco system.
Before watching this video I thought there were just a lot of dead tree stumps around..
However, now it’s clear these are important habitat.
Some of the information in the video is east coast specific, but generally a really good video on the topic.
We should also thank our Wood Peckers/”construction workers” for building these wildlife condos.
Pileated Woodpeckers like the one below are becoming rare in Ambleside-Dundarave in my experience, but I did see one just recently on a snag very much like the photo below which is courtesy of Cornell Lab’s “All About Birds”
