Are There A Lot of Fish in West Vancouver’s Creeks? Yes!

The numbers vary according to organizations like Streamkeepers, but there are a lot of fish in West Vancouver creeks with the Streamkeeper’s March 2025 Survey revealing especially high volumes of salmon and trout.

“2024 was a banner year for salmon returning to West Vancouver’s creeks, according to the West Vancouver Streamkeepers Society” (North Shore News, Mar 2, 2025)

Creeks like Lawson and MacDonald Creeks continue to be fish-bearing despite the beating they have taken from development, tree, shrub and grass streamside cutting, and toxic dumping of materials (see District of West Vancouver Bylaws prohibiting harm to our environment) but nature is resilient.

A biologist’s report of Lawson Creek dated December 2023 available on the District of West Vancouver’s website indicates:

“Several species and life stages are known to inhabit Lawson Creek, including Coho salmon, Chum salmon, and Coastal Cutthroat Trout (Habitat Wizard, 2023) (Pacific Streamkeepers, 2017).

Overall Lawson Creek provides valuable habitat for fish,
birds, and invertebrates.”

So reports of the demise of any West Vancouver creeks are “greatly exaggerated”

Good news for our West Vancouver community which holds an estimated $3.2 billion in natural assets. We need to protect our natural assets as much as possible.
